Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly expanded across multiple fields. In journalism, it has introduced significant challenges for both education and professional practice. In both domains, it requires continuous and rapid updating while raising ethical issues that cannot be addressed at the same pace. The aim of this study is to analyse, within the context of the Valencian Community (Spain), how universities and professional associations have responded to these challenges through their educational initiatives, and to compare these efforts with the current needs of journalists in their daily professional practice. In doing so, the study identifies knowledge gaps, future research directions, applications aligned with journalistic practice, and potential reservations regarding the implementation of AI technologies. To achieve this, a mixed-methods approach was employed, combining a survey of journalists (n = 88) with a systematic mapping of university and professional training programmes on AI applied to journalism and communication. The analysis of higher education included all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as micro-credentials. The findings reveal widespread AI adoption among journalists, largely supported by self-directed learning and primarily aimed at automating routine tasks. They also show a cross-curricular integration of AI-related content within university programmes and a growing trend towards specialised AI training offered by professional associations.
