«This is football, dad». Homophobia and hate speech in sport. The case of Borja Iglesias

Abstract

Celta de Vigo footballer Borja Iglesias was the victim of homophobic attacks on social media in connection with public demonstrations in which the striker took a clear stance on current issues. This research analyses the typology of hate attacks on the social network X (formerly Twitter) to ascertain the media pressure experienced by representatives of the sport subjected to public scrutiny. More than 1,500 comments were analysed, almost 46% of the messages contained hate, that is, they may constitute a crime to persecute a certain social group.

Arán Reig Martínez

Arán Reig-Martínez és graduat en Comunicació Audiovisual per la Universitat de València (UV). Ha cursat els màsters en Direcció i Producció de Contingut Audiovisual en la Universitat Internacional de València i Atresmedia i en Nous Periodismes, Comunicació Política i Societat del Coneixement en la UV. Actualment és estudiant del Programa de Doctorat de Comunicació i Interculturalitat en la UV.

Carles Senso Vila

Carles Xavier Senso Vila és doctor en Història i llicenciat en Periodisme i Història. Va treballar onze anys en el diari Levante-EMV, del qual hui és columnista d’opinió. Ha publicat més d’una vintena de llibres de temàtica històrica, cultural i esportiva. En 2018 va guanyar el premi Ramón Barnils de Periodisme d’Investigació, a Barcelona. Amb la seua tesi doctoral va aprofundir en els mitjans de comunicació del final del franquisme i la Transició i va obtindre la nota de matrícula cum laude.
