Abstract

This article aims to justify the need for comparative multidisciplinary study of European cultural capitals, taking their excellence and capacity to influence certain cultural sectors as our central axis. Analysis of the evolution of the different European capitals over the last few centuries—both in terms of their artistic production and their cultural institutions—gives us a clearer picture of
the symbolic assets that make up the cultural identity of each city. To achieve this perspective, we must use a methodology that considers history, sociology, and urban studies within the contemporary European framework.
