This paper reviews the construction and evolution of the historical memory of James I as an identity symbol for the Valencian people, focusing on the historical period of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It analyses how the figure of the Conqueror King has been subject to successive appropriations by different ideological currents. During the Renaixença, James I became the unifying link of the territories of the former Crown of Aragon and a symbol of foral liberties against absolutism. The 1876 commemoration, organised by Teodor Llorente, consolidated Valencia as the cultural capital of these territories, while that of 1908 revealed political tensions between Blasquist republicans, moderate republicans and Valencianists. The 1976 centenary, celebrated in the midst of the Transition process, shows the political instrumentalisation of James I's figure. The text constitutes a reflection on the persistence of historical figures as structuring elements of collective identity, in a context of political change and redefinition of territorial identities in contemporary Spain.
