The text, written as an essay grounded in my own research, examines the role images played in shaping the memory of James I of Aragon in the Kingdom of Valencia during the late Middle Ages. I focus on a specific work, taking into account the elements that reinforced its persuasive power: I analyse the Altarpiece of Saint George of the Centenar de la Ploma in relation to its surrounding space and to the civic commemorations that promoted the viewing of the polyptych. I argue that images were the most effective means of shaping the monarch’s memory. This was due to two factors: their visual accessibility and the functions of images.
