Abstract

The European continent was transformed by the formation of modern nations during the 19th century. Literature contributed intensively to develop the growing feeling of national belonging; conversely it underwent deep changes linked with the goals of nation-building. The conception of the history of literature and the definition of national spirit were at the core of the processes determining the «nationalisation» of literatures.
