Uses and Abuses of Creativity. The Sociology of Creative Processes, Digital Transitions and Creative Policies
Abstract
The notion of creativity has attracted growing iattention in the social sciences. This interest runs parallel to the debateon creativity’s potential for the economic and social development of professional skills and cultural industries. However, criticalinterpretations of this concept have arisen because, as some commentators have argued, it may be used to legitimise abrupt digitisation and instrumentalisation of culture, supported by economic interests. This paper compares the contributions made by several cultural sociologists (Bourdieu, Collins and Menger), who attempt to rethink under what conditions creativity can flourish, and how the digital paradigm and its instrumentalisation is altering (not always positively) the cultural structures and interaction frameworks that foster creativity.
