En aquest article s’entrellacen tres àrees d’investigació diferents i es mostra com l’estreta
interacció amb la música i el fenomen fan musical dels baby boomers són recursos que poden
aprofitar els fans, les famílies i els professionals sanitaris per a prolongar l’esperança de vida,
mitigar la soledat i millorar la qualitat de vida d’aquesta primera generació de fans majors i de
les futures. En primer lloc, es pren com a punt de partida un estudi qualitatiu en profunditat
sobre la beatlemania, per a exposar, seguidament, que la presència constant dels Beatles en la
cultura i en la vida dels boomers al llarg de sis anys crítics de desenvolupament va tenir un
impacte profund i durador, i que aquesta experiència és un recurs per a la resiliència i el
benestar al llarg de tota una vida. A continuació, s’analitza la investigació en neuromusicologia i
musicoteràpia, per a mostrar, seguidament, les nombroses formes en què la música funciona com a
tecnologia de la salut per a les persones majors. Finalment, analitzant aquestes qüestions a la
llum de la deterioració actual i prevista de la funció cognitiva i altres indicadors de benestar en
aquesta generació, el present article proposa que els boomers estan especialment preparats i
posicionats per a beneficiar-se de l’ús terapèutic de la música
per a la salut en general i com a suport per a l’etapa gerotranscendent del desenvolupament adult.

Candy Leonard, Investigadora independent

És autora de Beatleness: How the Beatles and Their Fans Remade the World (Arcade, 2014; 2016) i ha escrit sobre la beatlemania, els boomers i la cultura pop per a diverses publicacions, incloent-hi volums acadèmics sobre els Beatles.

És investigadora independent i doctora en Sociologia per la Universitat de New Hampshire, a més de màster en Desenvolupament Humà en Teachers College, Colúmbia (Nova York).
